They are considered to be the ancestors of both Neanderthals and modern humans. They had a cranium capacity overlapping with modern humans but were physically larger. The average height for them is 180 cms with 65 kgs of weight. Some of the southern populations are considered to be gians averaging over 2.13 m. Physically they resembled modern humans but their skulls were still more like Homo Erectus with no chin or forehead. They also have large supraorbital ridge. They are believed to be direct descendents of Homo Ergaster.

They show social behaviou with probably the first species of Homo to bury their dead. They however lacked art and their tools were crude compared to humans.
The first fossils were discovered in 1907 by Dr. Maur. However it was not considered to be a new species of Homo genus till another decade. There have since been multiple finds of Heidelbergensis fossils from various other parts of europe.
